Description of talk:
Youth who have experienced trauma, are particularly vulnerable to self harming behaviors. In this interactive workshop designed for both parents/caregivers and professionals, participants will learn why children may self-harm, the connection to childhood trauma and how to recognize signs of self-harming behaviors. Participants will also learn how to recognize other signs of emotional distress, crisis and suicide risk. They will learn to implement immediate help in the midst of crisis resulting from self-injury, how to talk to a child during times of calm and how to develop longer-term strategies for preventing crises and supporting healing, resilience and hope for vulnerable youth.
Training Objectives:
Participants will be able to describe 3 reasons children may self-harm and recognize symptoms of self-
harming behavior.
Participants will be able to use trauma-informed approaches to talk to and respond to children who self-
harm.
Participants will learn to distinguish between self-harm and suicide ideation and understand when to seek
outside help for the child.
Speaker & Bio

Sue Badeau
Sue Badeau speaks on trauma and resilience, parenting and more. With a degree in Early Childhood Education from Smith College, Sue is an in-demand keynote speaker, workshop leader, curriculum writer and consultant for numerous agencies, courts, prison systems, and other organizations across all 50 states and internationally. Sue and her husband, Hector are lifetime parents of 22 (20 adopted), longtime foster parents and have many grandchildren. They have co-authored Are We There Yet: The Ultimate Road Trip, Adopting and Raising 22 Kids and with daughter Chelsea Badeau, Building Bridges of Hope: A Coloring Book for Adults Caring for Children Who Have Experienced Trauma. Sue also recently co-authored Healing Connections: A Community Approach to Trauma and Attachment. Sue and Hector raised their family in Philadelphia and now live in an RV, dividing time between work, family and volunteering in Kenya.
