Description

The Alabama Psychiatric Medication Review Team (APMRT), in collaboration with Alabama Department of Human Resources, was developed to investigate the possibility of transitioning children from psychotropic medication to behavioral interventions that are managed by board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs). The overarching goal of this project is to reduce the use of psychotropic medication for behavior management in Alabama foster care. This webinar will review the work of this project and its implications on how we serve children ongoing.

Topics to be discussed:
What is the role of psychotropic medication in treating foster and adopted children?
How and why foster and adopted children are often over-medicated.
Discuss resources and strategies for professionals and parents to help ensure appropriate psychotropic medication use in children.

Dr. Peter Lusche

For over thirty years, Dr. Lusche has dedicated a significant amount of his practice to developing and coordinating community mental health programs for children, including children in protective custody and foster care. He currently serves on the APMRT at Auburn University as a child psychiatrist.

Erica Kierce

is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and faculty in the Auburn University School of Nursing. She is a doctoral candidate at Vanderbilt University and completed her psychiatric nurse practitioner preparation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her research and experience focus on child and adolescent mental health treatment and drug-gene compatibility.
